New ITR rules for AY 2025–26: historical records and correction checks

Assessment Year 2025–26 relates to income earned in Financial Year 2024–25, from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025. This guide helps Indian salaried taxpayers, consultants and small-business owners review that return and its supporting records. Begin with the year and income sources before choosing a form or attempting a correction.

Your next steps
  1. 1. Confirm the year

Match each income statement and challan to FY 2024–25 and AY 2025–26.

  2. 2. Reconcile evidence

Compare income, tax credits, investments and asset transactions with the filed return.

  3. 3. Identify the issue

Separate missing income, a processing mismatch, a notice and an unverified submission.

  4. 4. Check the remedy

Verify legal eligibility, portal options, costs and supporting evidence before taking action.

Keep assessment year and current tax year separate

The department’s transition guidance distinguishes AY 2026–27, covering FY 2025–26 income under the Income-tax Act, 1961, from Tax Year 2026–27 under the Income-tax Act, 2025. Neither is the AY 2025–26 return discussed here. A document showing 2025 in its name can therefore relate to a different income period.

Create separate folders for the assessment year, submitted return, acknowledgement, tax computation, challans and any processing intimation. Add the corresponding financial year to each folder label. Before uploading a utility or paying a demand, compare the year on the screen to the year in the notice. Keep later-year transactions outside the historical calculation.

Understand the AY 2025–26 changes that need documents

One useful AY 2025–26 change was limited access to ITR-1 for eligible section 112A long-term capital gains up to ₹1.25 lakh, subject to the remaining form conditions. This did not make ITR-1 suitable for every equity transaction or every taxpayer. Short-term gains, business income and other exclusions still require a separate form review.

The official ITR-1 FAQ also identifies additional loan information in the section 24(b) schedule and policy or document identification details for section 80C claims. Obtain the actual loan and investment records; do not reconstruct missing numbers from memory. Read the notified form and utility for AY 2025–26, since current-year screens or rate summaries may differ.

Review the complete income picture

Start with Form 16 or 16A, bank interest certificates, AIS, Form 26AS, rent details and investment or broker statements. For a consultant, also review invoices, receipts, expenses and business records. Make a reconciliation sheet with one row per income source: books or statement amount, tax credit, return schedule and difference requiring explanation.

A prefilled entry is useful evidence, but it is not a complete personal financial history. Check missing interest, duplicate entries, incorrect ownership and amounts reported under the wrong year. A payment from a client after TDS does not show the entire gross income by itself. Keep notes on why a difference exists and request correction from the reporting organisation where appropriate.

For shares, mutual funds or property, gather acquisition and disposal records, transaction dates, cost evidence and charges. Separate realised transactions from unsold holdings. If overseas accounts, income or assets are involved, check residential status and the specific schedule instructions. It is inaccurate to say every non-resident must disclose every foreign asset in the same way.

Check form selection and tax-regime decisions

Identify salary, house-property, investment and business or professional income before reviewing the return form. A person with salary plus consulting receipts may need a different form from a salary-only taxpayer. The label freelancer does not automatically establish presumptive-tax eligibility. Examine the activity, taxpayer category, receipts and relevant year’s conditions.

For AY 2025–26, the new regime was the default regime. Choosing another regime, particularly where business income is involved, can involve separate option conditions. Review the actual return selection and any applicable option form and timing. Do not assume an investment payment produces a deduction under both regimes, or import a later Budget’s tax slabs into this historical return.

Choose the correction route after checking the status

As of this review date, do not attempt to reuse a 2025 revised or belated filing deadline. An updated return may be relevant to an eligible omission, but it is subject to exclusions, additional tax and other conditions. It is not a general route to reduce tax or increase a refund. The presence of a portal option alone does not establish that the facts satisfy the law.

A mistake apparent from the record in a processed intimation or order may call for a rectification review instead. A defective-return notice requires a response under that notice; an outstanding demand may need its own examination. First retrieve the filed return and full communication, record the date and reason, and then identify the appropriate action. Do not send a second unrelated return simply because a refund is delayed.

Check verification separately from payment and upload. The department’s e-verification manual describes available methods and the applicable verification requirement. Retain the verification confirmation and acknowledgement together. If the historical return remains unverified, obtain a specific review of its status and any condonation process; do not describe it as successfully completed without checking.

Prepare a clean review pack and quotation

For an efficient consultation, list each suspected problem in one sentence and attach the evidence that supports it. For example: bank interest appears twice, TDS credit is missing, or a business receipt was omitted. Give the adviser access through an appropriate authorised process and keep control of your account and signing decisions.

Ask for a ₹ estimate separating professional review, return preparation where available, tax, interest and any statutory additional tax or fee. Confirm whether rectification, notice responses, foreign schedules or multiple assessment years are included. A source-backed calculation can explain an expected position, but acceptance, processing time and a refund outcome are authority decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Which financial year does AY 2025–26 cover?

It covers FY 2024–25 income, from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025. Keep that historical period separate from AY 2026–27 and Tax Year 2026–27.

Can every taxpayer with share gains use ITR-1 for AY 2025–26?

No. The limited section 112A allowance is subject to the remaining form conditions. Review all income sources and exclusions before deciding which form applies.

Can I file an ordinary revised return for AY 2025–26 today?

The ordinary historical window has passed as of 7 October 2026. Check the actual problem and any available remedy rather than treating a past deadline as open.

Is ITR-U a route to increase my refund?

No. An updated return is subject to eligibility and restrictions and is not a general route to reduce tax or increase a refund. Review the facts before attempting it.

What documents should I bring for a historical-return review?

Bring the filed return, acknowledgement, verification evidence, tax computation, intimation or notice, income statements, tax-credit records and evidence of the suspected error.
